Inspiration
We are inspired by the student's need to commute a distance in a timely manner while also cutting down emissions from gas vehicles, promoting air quality and reducing noise pollution. We hope to connect the Cornell Community through a shared purpose of sustainability and efficient time usage.
What it does
Boosting Cornell’s tight-knit community, CU ‘Round allows fellow students to rent out their bikes, scooters, skateboards (e-vehicles included), as long as these vehicles do not contribute to tail-pipe emissions. To connect with a potential renter, users can use the chat feature and discuss pricing and any concerns. An up-to-date map informs users where the nearest vehicles are. Finally, a user statistics page summarizes distance traveled and time duration of rental.
Process
While brainstorming an initial app, we wished to BOTH engage the student body at Cornell while also creating a tangible impact. This created a challenge because oftentimes environmental problems require abstract, large-scale solutions that are not feasible immediately or are not implementable or solvable by a single application alone. Even within our niche app of bike/scooter/board sharing, we encountered the difficulty of taking on too many tasks at once. Balancing our desired complexity of the application with the time constraints of the weekend was a challenge.
What's next for CU'Round
Next steps include using machine learning to aggregate data based on the demand; if a particular time of day or week happens to draw the biggest crowd of potential customers, we hope to use this aggregated data to raise prices to match demand. We also hope to enhance CU’Round by implementing sorting; this includes allowing users to sort by vehicle, sort by rating magnitude, and sorting by radius to nearest vehicle.
