When this hackathon first started, we first set up and brainstormed. After settling down in our spot, ended up with a handful of ideas. These included:
- an iOS application dealing with compiling all the features of social networks based on most related keywords (using the Swift programming language)
- An iOS game utilizing the Unity game engine
- An Android app (something)
- A generic web page
- A Minecraft server mod on Bukkit (custom server platform) Exhausting innovative ideas, we looked for a project that was both simple and refined; a project that could potentially be finished in a 24-hour period. We came up with CTHex, a futuristic game inspired by a popular game mode, Capture the Flag. We started the design process in the early stages of hacking, with preliminary drawings. To get a feel of game instructions, we simulated the game on paper using coins, which we used in the final product. CTHex is an entertaining game that is also quite simple in concept compared to other turn-based strategy games. CTHex is a relatively easy game to learn: Grab the opposing teams flag (hex), and return it to your base. The hard part is getting there, which is only possible by outsmarting your opponent and predicting his moves. The lack of RNG, high skill cap, and ease of introduction are key features that make CTHex a fun yet challenging experience. This product is primarily targeted at the young adult demographic.
