Responding to COVID-19 Job Crisis Effectively [Covid Exit Strategy]
Preparing EU Businesses & Workers for the Digital Future during and after Covid-19, by creating a trusted source for the job results of career-focused programs. Helping businesses and learners see which programs offer them the best chances for a better career and which ones don't
Certification Service For Skilling Efforts
This project aims to develop a national certification for career-focused programs. So learners and employers could access an unbiased assessment on the jobs-results of professional development courses.
Which programs provide the most job opportunities to learners? Who are the people benefiting the most? And in which conditions: how much do they earn; do they have to relocate; how long does it take to get a good job?
These are questions worth asking in these challenging times. The fallout created by the virus is taking a toll directly on millions of jobs across the globe and it’s becoming increasingly clear that some won’t return. While it's hard to quantify the impact (some countries are doing better to prevent job loss) businesses will need at least to promote internal mobility or redeploy talent. In the worse scenario, companies will need to close and the race to automation will add even more pressure on the system.
Reskilling or redeploying workers wasn't a top priority for businesses until now. However, the virus is exposing the fragility of an old infrastructure. In the middle of the biggest industry turmoil since WWII, reskilling or redeploying workers takes months of time, a huge amount of investment by the government, and there aren't any guarantees that the workers will have the tools to be relevant in the new economy.
Now we can actually create an implement a system that is far more efficient and that promotes opportunities without regards for zip code.
Imagine a platform where workers and businesses would be able to see courses and see their job performance. Answering questions like "how many people get employed after the course?; In the area they studied? Do they look like me?"
We believe that career-focused programs should provide learners with job opportunities or the tools to improve their career. However students and employers lack the access to clear and trusted employment data, which are crucial to make well-informed decisions about their educational investments, especially in such challenging times.
New kinds of programs, like bootcamps, are creating new options for career development and bring new advances into the industry. But, the unclear impact and uneven regional availability of such programs creates obstacles we must address if we want to prepare the next generation of 21st century workers.
This project would be transformacional for a Covid Exit Strategy. We would allow learners and businesses to think about work and how we grow skills in the new economy,
The insights produced by this certification will push the EU agenda: to push for improved rigor, support and choice in professional development. Which will in turn, allow EU companies and individuals to take advantage of the digital revolution. In a way that promotes excellence, equity and trust in skilling efforts.
Thank you for reading.
It's a simple project, but I want to hear your ideas, in particularly:
a) Put yourself in the shoes of the learner, Would there be and argument against knowing if a specific job-focused program was having success? In other words, Learners won't care about if a program is getting people jobs?
Inspiration
My generation was hit with several crisis that prevented great students from having an honest shot at a great career. Altough painful, that taught me a few lessons.
I learned that when crisis hit, companies default to slower hiring and from more prestigious schools - it's less risky for them.
I also learned there are courses that far exceed the average and are able to give the best opportunity for learners.
But most importantly, I learned that learners and organizations don't have the full picture of the actual job results performance. In other words, they don't know how many people are getting jobs after graduation and in which conditions. And because of that, businesses don't see the point of investing in their workforce and students are left prey to marketing plots.
There must be a better way to promote transparency and make sure everyone can navigate these challenging times and at the end, create better companies and better jobs.
What it does
A) Learners and businesses would be able to see which skilling and reskilling efforts would offer better tools to build careers and sustain better jobs.
B) Great performing courses would be able to expand nationally and improve their rooster of learners
C) Increase trust in career developing courses by minimizing investment risks.
How I built it
It's still a concept. I wanted to understand if it's a worthwhile investment to pursue this kind of transparency.
Challenges I ran into
Running a solo mission is tough if you have to change midways, even if I could see the path forward, paralisis analisis did a number on my motivation.
Looked way too much for obstacles, next time i must have a more Steve Jobs mindset.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Was a rough weekend on the offline world, but I managed to pivot concept two times and was great to remember the thrill of startup life.
What I learned
Couldn't find a compelling argument against this kind of certification, with the optics of the learners.
Really smart organizations prefer to focus on giving free courses, rather than their performance. If this was applied to other areas of their businesses, they wouldn't exist.
Automation was a growing a trend, now it's a necessity. Businesses that fail to get lean and fast, will face a crushing international competition.
Government is quick to adapt old tools to new problems. Bad at creating new tools for new times.
