Inspiration

I'm currently a freshman in computer science taking CS 314: Data Structures at UT, and like everyone else in the course, I have had a hard time getting full marks on any assignments due to style errors. Errors such as accidentally using a number without giving it context and inconsistent operator spacing haunt my nightmares. So I decided to make a web application that could handle some of the more tedious style checks for me and could help not only me but also my peers in getting our well deserved points on assignments.

What it does

The web application prompts you to upload a java file, due to the style criteria being catered towards CS 314, to be checked. Once you submit a file, the application will look through every line of your code and find common style errors. You will then be shown the line numbers which had styling issues along with their respective errors and a marked up version of your code.

How I built it

Built on the Flask micro web framework using python, HTLM, and CSS.

Challenges I ran into

This was my first time doing web development, so I was very new to HTML, and CSS. I also lacked experience with python, so I spent a lot of my time trying to learn from online resources along with the workshops provided by this hackathon.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm just proud of the fact that I actually finished something at my first hackathon!

What I learned

I learned how to use Flask, HTLM, and CSS. I also greatly increased my confidence in using python.

What's next for CS 314 Style Checker

I hope to flesh out the current checks and to add more along with making the page more visually appealing.
