Inspiration
As an avid crypto investor navigating fragmented exchanges, sky-high tax bills, and unmanageable risk, I saw a gap: no tool combined AI-driven analysis with practical tax/DeFi tracking. I wanted to build something that felt like a personal crypto CFO—simple, data-driven, and tailored to real investor pain points.
What it does
CryptoPortfolio AI aggregates cross-exchange crypto holdings, calculates risk scores (0-100) based on volatility/concentration, suggests tax-loss harvesting opportunities, tracks DeFi staking/liquidity yields, and provides AI-backed rebalancing recommendations to align with your risk tolerance (Conservative/Aggressive).
How we built it
We started with core exchange API integrations (Coinbase/Binance/Kraken) to pull real-time portfolio data, then built a Python-based risk-scoring algorithm (weighting volatility + asset concentration >30%). Frontend with React/Chart.js for intuitive visualizations; PostgreSQL for data storage; Stripe for premium subscriptions ($19/month).
Challenges we ran into
API rate limits broke real-time sync—we built a caching layer to retry failed calls gracefully. Calculating impermanent loss for DeFi pools required complex math (APY = (rewards * 365) / staked amount) and validating tax rules (wash-sale 30-day window) across jurisdictions was tricky.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a unified dashboard that simplifies multi-exchange tracking; building an AI risk model that adapts to market conditions; delivering actionable tax savings calculations (20% capital gains rate) that users can act on immediately.
What we learned
Financial regulation compliance for tax tools is non-negotiable; user trust hinges on transparent data sync (we prioritized read-only APIs); simplicity beats complexity—investors want insights, not overwhelming data.
What's next for this project
Add support for more DeFi protocols, integrate advanced tax reporting features, build a mobile-responsive UI, and refine the AI rebalancing model to factor in transaction costs more granularly. We’re also exploring integration with tax filing software to close the loop on tax optimization.
