Overview

The huge demand for cryptocurrency made us curious as to what kind of impact they are having on the environment. With the increase of demand for miners and mining farms across the world, and the fact that they work and reward their users with computational power, thus electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. We intended to observe and analyze the geographical distribution, hash rate, electricity consumption, and CO2 emissions of the mining farms locations in the States of the US and Globally.

The Hack

The cloud we created provides you with a simple Dashboard overview of the energy consumption of bitcoin globally, hashing percentage, and CO2 emissions based on two types of grids. The cloud also contains a comparison between bitcoin mining energy consumption and Ethereum. _CO2 emissions are grouped by state and the hashing rate provides a worldwide view. We intend to use these data and display them for the world to see; in order to raise awareness about the emissions and impacts, Cryptocurrencies Mining has on the environment. _

How we built it

Using SalesForce net zero cloud and its features

The Approach

Till Saturday night, we couldn't upload any of the data we had. The first batch that went through was exactly at midnight. Leaving us with less than 12 hours to go. We failed constantly at uploading the data to the correct object, or displaying it... the errors were countless. However, we didn't give up and in the end, we even figured out multiple ways to import data, and upload and match the records! It's worth noting that in order to understand how the net-zero cloud works we created and edited many tabs, reports, and dashboards; to familiarize ourselves with the platform.

Effort

_ Group effort! We are a group of two, me and my twin sister. So, we did what we always do, Coordinate and split tasks 50%-50% with each individual focusing on things they are passionate about and have experience at. Since we struggles with importing that data we all worked constantly at that until we resolved it with the help of the mentors. Additionally, Aldur Almaknoon worked on the dashboard and connected the fields and relationships, and AlRaheeq Almaktum worked on collecting and reviewing the data._

Accomplishments that we're proud of

To be honest, There's big room for improvement in the content of the work we produced in the net-zero cloud and extend more into the insights it can provide for the world. It's important to note that we are very proud to have worked with net-zero cloud to raise awareness about GHG emissions in this new sector. Also, The fact that we stuck through it and wanted to finish it even if we had one simple table.

What we learned

This was our first time doing anything related to date science. It was fun trying to logically connect the data to form a valuable connection. First time using a cloud too. We tried to understand and use most of the features available, like tableau.

What's next for Cryptomining Carbon Emissions

Focusing on finding ways to lower bitcoin consumption and investigating further into lower consuming currencies.
