Inspiration
Crypto can be exciting but intimidating for beginners. The fear of losing real money prevents many people from actually learning. We wanted to create a safe environment where anyone could learn by doing.
What it does
Cryptoholic gives users 10,000 virtual RC (Reward Coins) to practice crypto trading. Users can explore market prices, buy and sell crypto, manage their portfolio, track transactions, and analyze profit or loss—all without risking real money
How we built it
We built Cryptoholic using React + Vite for the frontend, Node.js + Express for the backend, PostgreSQL for persistent data, JWT + bcrypt for authentication, and the CoinGecko API for cryptocurrency market data.
Challenges we ran into
Handling external API rate limits and keeping market data reliable was one of our biggest challenges. We solved this with server-side caching and fallback data, while also ensuring authentication and trading operations remained secure and consistent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned an idea into a working end-to-end trading simulator with authentication, virtual currency, real-time market data, buying, selling, portfolio management, transaction history, and P/L analysis. Most importantly, users can actually learn through experience without financial risk.
What we learned
We learned how different parts of a full-stack application work together—from database design and authentication to API integration, state management, error handling, and deployment considerations. We also learned that solving reliability problems is just as important as building features.
What's next for Cryptoholic
We want to evolve Cryptoholic into a complete crypto learning platform with paper-trading competitions, leaderboards, personalized learning paths, AI-powered trading insights, risk analysis, market simulations, and eventually a community where beginners can learn from experienced traders.
