Inspiration
Inspired by the idea of purchasing homes as a family or people being more likely to invest within stock investment groups, we wanted to take this concept and bring it to the world of cryptocurrency. I know personally that my less tech-savvy family members fear cryptocurrency due to their lack of understanding. However, with CryptoClan they can invest smaller amounts of money alongside people they trust and want to invest with.
What it does
CryptoClan is a standard cryptocurrency wallet and trading platform, which took some inspiration from the Shellhacks sponsor CoinRoutes. These fundamental features include viewing historical and live data of cryptocurrencies in the market and viewing profits/losses after investing but with the added twist of doing everything under the clan branding. While individual investing still remains as a feature by being a solo clan, the added ability to join a clan allows for larger pooling of money and bigger investments. Once a clan trade is initiated, the price of the coin at that time is locked until a vote by all clan members is carried out with either majority vote or unanimous vote being needed to approve the purchase. Every clan member then contributes the same amount of investment into the purchase coin.
How we built it
CryptoClan was built by diving up into a front-end and back-end team. The UI was designed by Roie in Figma using various preexisting assets provided within the software. Afterward, I joined the front-end team that used React, JavaScript, Tailwind CSS, and HTML. We used Gitbash to push and create pull requests on the Github repository for the team. We only had one back-end developer who took on the daunting task of creating our necessary APIs in Java.
Challenges we ran into
TIME! We were definitely overconfident and overambitious in what we thought could be written out in code within the time frame of the hackathon. Another challenge was coordination between our more morning-oriented coders vs. our night-oriented coders leading to some APIs not being readily available or online when needed. The last challenge we ran into was life as our backend developer had to deal with a family emergency and we would also have to take breaks from the hackathon to focus on schoolwork assignments.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
link While we were unable to get close to a final product, we were able to get through the fundamental display of the login, signup, and dashboard web pages. This shows that we were going to follow through on our concept design on Figma and create a working product if we had the manpower and time to do so.
What we learned
I, Roie, am overall happy with my experience as I grew as a full-stack developer and was able to apply myself in a website development environment. I only transitioned from studying Chemistry to Computer Science last year and have accomplished so much as a developer at this hackathon and am hoping to continue working on ambitious projects and improving my skillset. While being the lead on designing the web app on Figma with little to no prior experience, I discovered a great UI design tool and was able to design a cryptocurrency wallet that maybe be deployed by full-fledged companies and startups.
What's next for CryptoClan
Ideally, CoinRoutes would see our potential and foster our growth through a full-fledged internship! If that doesn't occur, we as a team will definitely continue to grow our skills in the field of web design and development. I, Roie, will definitely be doing more projects centered around web app development at my local university's clubs or individually. Shellhacks has provided me an exciting branching point to jump off of and continue to excel in my computer science career.
