Inspiration

Science is often difficult to understand when concepts are only presented through textbooks, diagrams, and 2D images. We wanted to create a more interactive way for students to explore scientific concepts by bringing them into the real world using Augmented Reality (AR).

What it does

Cryptrix is an AR-based scientific learning application that transforms complex scientific concepts into interactive 3D visualizations.

Users can select a scientific topic and view its 3D model in their real environment through their smartphone camera. The platform is designed to support multiple scientific subjects, including physics, chemistry, biology, and earth and space science.

Examples include:

  • Magnetic fields
  • Electric current
  • Molecular structures
  • Cell structures
  • Human anatomy
  • Solar system and planetary models

How we built it

We are building Cryptrix using:

  • Unity – Main application and 3D development platform
  • AR Foundation – AR framework for Unity
  • ARCore – Android AR tracking and environment detection
  • C# – Application logic and interactions
  • 3D Models – Representation of scientific concepts

The application detects real-world surfaces using the device camera and allows virtual scientific models to be placed and viewed in the user's environment.

Challenges we ran into

  • Understanding AR development as beginners
  • Setting up Unity and AR Foundation correctly
  • Configuring Android and ARCore support
  • Detecting real-world surfaces reliably
  • Creating suitable 3D models for scientific concepts
  • Making complex scientific concepts visually understandable
  • Maintaining good performance on mobile devices

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully established the foundation for a mobile AR learning application
  • Integrated AR capabilities into Unity
  • Implemented real-world surface detection
  • Developed the concept of interactive scientific 3D visualization
  • Designed the application to support multiple scientific subjects rather than a single topic
  • Created a platform that can be expanded with additional scientific models

What we learned

  • Fundamentals of Augmented Reality development
  • Unity-based application development
  • AR Foundation and ARCore
  • 3D model integration and visualization
  • Mobile application deployment
  • Interaction between virtual objects and real-world environments
  • How AR can be used as an educational technology

What's next for Cryptrix

  • Add more scientific subjects and 3D models
  • Add interactive experiments and simulations
  • Add quizzes and assessments
  • Add voice and text-based explanations
  • Allow users to modify scientific parameters in real time
  • Add progress tracking and personalized learning
  • Improve the visual quality and realism of AR models
  • Expand Cryptrix into a complete AR-based scientific learning platform
