-->“Crunch Time helps you remember

the right number of servings from each food group (grains, veggies, fruits, dairy, meat and beans, and sugars/fats) that you should eat for a balanced diet. We wanted to make food education fun for kids our own age so we invented the game “Crunch Time to teach kids 7-12 yrs old about what to eat to be healthy and the companion tool, “Muncher Cruncher to help kids keep track of what they are actually eating. We made the game “Crunch Time simple, so even younger children could play it. We made the game fun so that you would want to play it. We made the game for a mobile phone so you could play it wherever you go! <!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->

“Crunch Time” helps you remember the right number of servings from each food group (grains, veggies, fruits, dairy, meat and beans, and sugars/fats) that you should eat for a balanced diet. We wanted to make food education fun for kids our own age so we invented the game “Crunch Time” to teach kids 7-12 yrs old about what to eat to be healthy and the companion tool, “Muncher Cruncher” to help kids keep track of what they are actually eating. We made the game “Crunch Time” simple, so even younger children could play it. We made the game fun so that you would want to play it. We made the game for a mobile phone so you could play it wherever you go!

To play the game, just tap on the icon for each food group the correct number of times to identify how many servings you should eat each day. We carefully drew the food icons to represent accurately the right serving size for each food group. The food icons flash on and off and move around at different speeds. The bread icon moves the slowest making it easy to tap because you should eat at least 9 servings of grains each day. The cupcake moves the fastest making it the most difficult to tap to remind you that you shouldn't eat too much sugar/fat. Once you tap on the food icon the correct number of times, the icon disappears! To make the game more challenging, at the end of the game during “Crunch Time”, the speed at which the icons move increases. If you tap the cupcake more than once, the game automatically goes into “Crunch Time” to show how eating too many fats/sugars makes it more difficult to eat a well-balanced diet.

The daily recommended servings for children 7-12 years old is the same as for teen girls and active woman, but we want to make an upgrade that will also customize recommended servings for younger children, teen boys, and adult men and moderately active women. We also want to add a physical activity bonus like a reminder to jump rope or play soccer for the recommended amount of time each day to remind kids what they should do as well as what they should eat!
