Inspiration
We all trust privacy settings, but they only control what you choose to share. They say nothing about what can be worked out from the pattern. Your timestamps show when you sleep, your photo metadata shows where you live, and a two-week silence shows when you’re away. Nobody had ever shown people that view. We also thought about children: they’re getting on social media earlier than ever, and their parents often post about them before they can consent. They build a public record before they understand what a record is.
What it does
Crumbs shows you what a stranger could work out about you from your public posts.
- Verify: like a bank, it checks your identity with an ID scan, a live face match, and a login to the account you’re checking. This means you can only look up yourself.
- Consent: you tick three separate consent statements before anything runs.
- Analyse: it reads your own public posts and returns findings on your routine, location, work, closest contacts, absences, and what you’re likely after. Each finding shows its evidence and a confidence score.
- Warn and fix: it highlights your riskiest combinations (for example, where you live plus when you’re away) and suggests fixes.
- Erase: nothing is stored, and the report disappears when you close the page. ## How we built it
Challenges we ran into
Making the tool useful without it becoming a stalking tool, which led to self-lookup only, identity verification, and per-clause consent. Handling face and ID data safely, since biometric data is especially sensitive. Keeping inferences honest, with evidence and confidence on each one, so it doesn’t overclaim. Deciding how to show highly sensitive inferences (health, money) without causing harm.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Turning an abstract privacy risk into something you can see in under a minute.
What we learned
Disclosure and inference are different things, and most privacy tools only cover the first.
