Inspiration

When coming to decision for the hackathon given the topic of essential needs for CUNY students we looked inwards towards the issue at had. As CUNY students it is a universal experience to face hardship. Whether it is from academic stress, or experiences that are harmful to our learning. These are issues that many of us have resolved and made us grow stronger. The resources that are available to students are there however it is for the most part unrecognized. Most of the time when faced with adversity many become resourceful and come up with solutions to their issues. We want to capture this resourcfulness and create a social media where users are able to post these situations and conflicts including how they overcame it. This will allow users to take inspiration from those who have similar experiences and percivere from what they may be going through.

What it does

CUNY Crucial Circle is a social website for CUNY students to post about experiences and struggles they face regarding essential needs and receive help or bring awareness to other students as well as stay informed about CUNY resources.

How we built it

We built this using a ReactJS and Vite frontend and Flask backend using MongoDB for databases.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges communicating between backend and frontend as well as familiarizing ourselves with new concepts and systems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are all proud of our ability to adapt to using new systems in a short amount of time. We are proud most of all of the concept and the amount we completed given our circumstances.

What we learned

Each of us learned new systems: in the frontend, our team members were not completely familiar with React and none had been familiar with Vite. In the Backend, we familiarized ourselves with MongoDB and connecting a Flask backend to a ReactJS/Vite frontend.

What's next for Crucial Circle

CUNY Crucial Circle ideally would be a fully functional social platform where students could create posts under specified categories about their needs and/or experiences, and students could interact with one another's posts to get or give help where possible.
