Inspiration
CrossTeach (http://www.crossteach.com/) are a UK charity who would normally be working with schools at this time - they take over a church building and invite classes of 10-11 year olds from the nearest school. They set up the church as four "crime scenes" - the meal, the garden, the trial and the grave, and the kids collect evidence. At the end they review it and discover that it is actually the Easter Story, and there's a big reveal.
What it does
This project brings the Easter Experience online so that it can be done "virtually" at home.
How I built it
It's a Ruby on Rails framework but most of the actual interactivity is written in Javascript. For now I used placeholder art from Monkey Island, but it will be very easy to replace with real content soon.
Challenges I ran into
Time!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The scripting API for coding up each scene was really nice, and gave a lovely balance between easy of use and the full power of Javascript as well.
What I learned
Somebody suggested early on that I scale back my ambitions in order to get something running - hence the Monkey Island artwork/animation. You can accomplish a surprising amount in a week if you focus on the right things and don't get bogged down by the skills that you don't have!
What's next for CrossTeach Easter Experience
Next week I hope to flesh out the real content and hopefully trial it with a local youth group.
