Bug reporting is broken. After years of watching the same painful cycle repeat - QA finds a bug, writes "the button doesn't work", developer asks "what browser?", QA sends a screenshot, developer asks "can you record it?" - I knew there had to be a better way.
One bug. Ten emails. Three days. Still not reproduced.
I built Crosscheck to eliminate this frustration forever.
What it does
Crosscheck is a Chrome extension that captures everything developers need to fix bugs in a single click:
- Screenshots with annotation tools
- Screen recordings for full context
- Instant replay - automatically saves the last 60 seconds before the bug
- Console logs captured automatically
- Network requests to see failed API calls
- User action timeline showing exactly what was clicked
Then push directly to Jira or ClickUp with all data attached.
How I built it
Crosscheck is built as a Chrome extension using:
- JavaScript for core functionality
- Chrome Extension APIs for screen capture and browser integration
- React for the dashboard UI
- Integration APIs for Jira and ClickUp
The instant replay feature required implementing a continuous background recording buffer that stores the last 60 seconds without impacting browser performance.
Challenges I faced
The biggest challenge was implementing instant replay efficiently. Recording continuously without draining system resources required careful optimization of the recording buffer and smart compression.
Another challenge was capturing console logs and network requests in sync with the video timeline, so developers can see exactly what error occurred at which moment.
What I learned
- Chrome Extension APIs have powerful capabilities for screen capture
- Efficient buffer management is crucial for continuous recording
- The gap between QA and developers is a universal pain point
- Simple solutions to frustrating problems can have huge impact
What's next for Crosscheck
- More integrations (Asana, Trello, Linear)
- Firefox extension
- Team collaboration features
- AI-powered bug categorization ## How I built it
