Inspiration

In many parts of Africa, especially in Rwanda, farmers face two major challenges: identifying crop diseases early and knowing where to sell their products at the best price. This lack of access to timely information leads to crop loss and reduced income.

We were inspired to build a solution that empowers farmers with both crop intelligence and market intelligence in one simple platform.


What it does

CropSense AI is a smart web application that helps farmers:

  • Upload an image of a crop and receive instant diagnosis, causes, and treatment suggestions
  • Analyze market prices across different locations in Rwanda
  • Visually explore the best places to sell their products using an interactive map
  • Receive AI-powered insights to make better farming and selling decisions

How we built it

We built CropSense AI as a frontend-focused hackathon project with a strong emphasis on user experience and design.

  • Designed a modern UI using clean layouts, cards, and smooth animations
  • Simulated AI behavior using intelligent logic and structured responses
  • Created a dynamic market system using realistic mock data
  • Implemented a language system for accessibility
  • Built an interactive Rwanda map experience to visualize market opportunities

Challenges we ran into

  • Fixing non-responsive chat functionality and simulating realistic AI responses
  • Handling API limitations (weather API subscription issues) and replacing them with mock data
  • Ensuring consistent language translation across the entire UI
  • Making the system feel like a real product while keeping it simple and fast for a hackathon

What we learned

  • Simplicity wins — focusing on core features is more powerful than building everything
  • UI/UX plays a huge role in how users and judges perceive a product
  • AI doesn't always need to be complex — smart simulation can deliver a strong experience
  • Building for real-world problems makes projects more impactful

What's next for CropSense AI

  • Integrate real AI models for crop disease detection
  • Connect to real-time market and weather APIs
  • Add mobile support for farmers in remote areas
  • Expand to more regions across Africa
