Inspiration

I come from an economics background although most of my work is related to financial economics and development economics. I decided to take part in this hackathon because I am writing a paper for the Agricultural Economics Society which is based in the United Kingdom titled, Do food subsidies harm development? The paper comes after an exhortation by the United Nations for countries to reduce subsidies to the agricultural sector.

I was attracted by the concern expressed in the hackathon about the impact that the agricultural sector has on development.

What it does

This is a statistical engine created in the programming language R that predicts crop yields based on a wide variety of variables. For the purposes of this hackathon, it is based on a statistical concept known as "Granger Causality", which is an advanced concept in statistics that is used to forecast values in a time series. In other words, Granger Causality looks at whether one time series has an impact on another time series.

How we built it

This was built in a programming language called R.

Challenges we ran into

The hackathon was too short plus I was not able to see the workshop.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm really glad to have understood more about the agricultural sector.

What we learned

I deepened my knowledge of crop yields and the impact that the weather has on them.

What's next for Crop Yield Statistical Engine

I would really love to take part in the Beyond Fellowship to expand my project further.
