Inspiration

We wanted to create something playful, nostalgic, and social that feels fresh for today’s generation. The idea behind Critter came from bringing back the excitement of digital pets and community driven games, but combining it with modern mobile interaction and competition. We were inspired by how simple games in the past created strong emotional attachment, and wanted to design something that feels equally memorable while still being relevant today.

What it does

Critter is an interactive digital game where users raise, customize, and interact with their own creature while completing challenges and competing with others through a mobile app. Players can earn rewards, unlock new features, and build a connection with their Critter through daily engagement. The experience blends strategy, personalization, and social play to keep users engaged over time.

How we built it

We designed the concept by first mapping out the user experience and identifying what would make the game feel both nostalgic and unique. The interface and visuals were created to feel playful and approachable, while the core mechanics focused on progression and interaction. We developed the prototype by combining design tools for interface planning and digital prototyping, while structuring the gameplay loop around simple but rewarding actions.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing nostalgia with originality. We wanted Critter to remind users of familiar digital experiences without feeling like a copy of something that already exists. Another challenge was deciding which features were essential enough to keep the experience simple, while still making the game feel engaging and modern.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Critter became more than just a game idea, it developed into a concept with clear identity, emotional appeal, and strong potential for user engagement. We also successfully created a direction that feels both creative and commercially relevant, which makes the project stand out.

What we learned

We learned that strong concepts often come from combining emotional familiarity with new interaction patterns. We also learned how important it is to simplify ideas early so the main experience remains strong and understandable.

What's next for Critter

Next, we want to expand Critter by adding more social features, deeper creature customization, and community events inside the app. We also want to test how users interact with the game in real time and refine the experience based on feedback to make it even more engaging
