These characters were created to be a part of a visual novel with Cyberpunk themes. They are part of a generation of critters who are moving into a city after the humans left for mysterious reasons, and attempting to assimilate to human culture: standing upright, using technology, and forming a close-knit, multi-cultured society.

These characters in particular are two opposing street racing groups that have to band together to solve a mystery.

When designing these characters, I looked for inspiration in busy, colorful cyberpunk artwork done by artists such as Josan Gonzalez, who makes character-focused portraits of cyberpunk worlds. However, I also wanted to take the characters in a more stylized direction and push their shapes to make their silhouettes unique and interesting, and to put thought into how outside creatures might try to use technology to replicate human behavior and culture.
