Inspiration

According to the APPA, 68% of American families own pets. While there are devices on the market capable of monitoring common household pets such as dogs and cats, a product that can monitor smaller critters is unavailable. Our device provides the solution by integrating the cost-efficient raspberry-pi with novel machine learning techniques.

What it does

Simply place the raspberry-pi camera in the view of your pet's enclosure and the raspberry-pi will pass frame captures to the Google Cloud's Vision AI API. Our network can then process this information to provide relevant statistics such as pet activity and which regions that it occupies throughout the day.

How we built it

We used Google Cloud's Vision AI Object Localization to derive relevant information from the raspberry-pi camera. Our back-end consists of NodeJS, Express, and MongoDB while the front-end utilizes React and AppEngine.

Challenges we ran into

Setting up a cloud based machine-learning environment presented some hurdles. We also ran into some issues while working through system integration.
