Inspiration
Food insecurity affects many university students, yet many don't use campus food pantries, not because they don't need them, but because of the stigma of being seen walking in. We wanted to remove that barrier entirely.
What it does
Crisper is a mobile web app that lets students browse campus food pantry inventory, find pantry locations on a map, filter by food category, and get directions — all without setting foot in a pantry until they're ready. Students can see exactly what's in stock before they go, removing the anxiety of showing up and not knowing what to expect. Pantry staff use a separate admin login to update inventory in real time
How we built it
We built Crisper as a React web app using Vite for fast development, Tailwind CSS for styling, and React Leaflet with real UC Davis building coordinates for the map. We used a clean mock data architecture so the app can plug into a real backend post-hackathon without restructuring any components.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app actually looks and feels like something a student would use. The admin panel gives pantry staff a real tool to manage inventory without any backend setup.
What's next for Crisper
Connect to Supabase for live inventory, add push notifications for restock alerts, and partner with the campus pantries to pilot it on real students.
