We were inspired by the TV show Monk. The main character in the show, a detective, possesses the unique ability to perfectly visualize a crime scene after just one visit. We felt that such abilities would be revolutionary for investigators in the real world. While we can't give superpowers, we knew we could use technology to help. We built CrimeLens using Gaussian splatting technology to cost-effectively visualize an environment, allowing investigators to recreate the scene from anywhere at anytime. We encountered and overcame many challenges during this hack, including the steep learning curve for Virtual reality development, the high computing overhead and lengthy preprocessing requirements of 3D Gaussian Splat visualization. In the end, we used Google Colab, PyTorch, CUDA, React, and Auth0 to enable our lofty goal.
