Inspiration

As a longtime SF resident it has been painful to watch crime escalate in our city.

If crime were a game, currently the advantage goes to the perpetrators.

We can change that starting today.

Lot's of people want to help. Citizens, politicians, and civic leaders all want and need an easier way to report crime real-time and give our public officials a chance to stop crime as it is happening.

What it does

Stop crime in 10 Seconds.

Using a simple to use chatbot that can be accessed by any of the major messaging services (WhatsApp, FB Messenger, Telegram). In less than 10 seconds you can report a crime in progress along with a photo or video.

Text a message in any language. It will be translated to english on the other end.

A Dashboard compiling the results is available to public officials and police offers to monitor and act upon.

The dashboard could be extended to a mobile solution so that additional "eyes and ears" like Community Business District officials, City Ambassadors, Meter Maids, Urban Alchemy, MTA employees and other City employees can be alerted to at-the-moment crimes occurring in their jurisdiction and assist the police in providing real-time follow-up information.

How we built it

The chatbot was built using Xenioo.

The dashboard was built using SwiftUI and Swift. Both are Apple programming languages.

The backend was built using Vapor using Swift and Postgres.

Time constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a practical tool that can be used by anyone without having them download an app.

It is not device dependent (works on Android or iPhone).

It is as easy to use. No different than if you were texting a friend. Except this time your friend is a chatbot!

Allows for any language to be entered and responded to in kind for the entire text conversation. English will be transcribed and stored on the back end.

What we learned

SF needs a lot of help. But, the tools and expertise are there to help SF.

What's next for Crime Stopper

To build it into a full fledged platform.

SF has led the nation in property crime consistently for years.

Let's turn the tables and make SF one of least attractive places for crime to be committed.

It can be done because everyone wants to contribute to the solution.

All that is needed is for an easy way to participate.
