Inspiration
This was inspired by our passion for classic existentialist literature, specifically Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky and The Stranger by Albert Camus
What it does
It is a very short personality test that aims to question the nature of humans, are we born vile creatures or are we corrupted as we grow older?
How we built it
It was built using the Renpy engine which was easier to navigate than Python and the illustrations were done on ibspaint X.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was figuring out how to name the files so that they would be recognized by the software, since we are beginner programmers, this took the most time. Another challenge was debugging, there wasn't enough time to fully debug everything but we managed to fix as many as we could find.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of the plot and the character concept as we got to combine our love of literature with one of our favorite genres of video games, horror.
Another thing that we are happy with is the 3 endings that the player is able to obtain, the logic behind it was hard, and oftentimes not, we felt like giving up, but we didn't. We tried our best and eventually reached a place where we could be satisfied with our first-ever hackathon.
What we learned
A new coding language that was very beginner-friendly but also used a lot of logic to actually make pathways for the game's ending. Another thing we learned is the process of not getting frustrated too easily, as it can make us miss the mistakes that are ever so small, which can ruin the whole code.
What's Next for Crime and Punishment
We need to add audio for the further development of this game, as it is a horror game, and it needs the ambiance of one. We did not have enough time to code the audio, but we are determined to work on it further to create a better experience.
