Inspiration

I was asked to keep score for a game of cricket with heavily customised rules. I looked around, but found no scoreboard app that is totally free. The handful of them which appeared free had underlying privacy issues abound! So I decided to make my own using Airtable & decided to submit this for the Wildcard category

What it does

The scorecard itself is extremely simple and readable by anyone who understands the game. It helps maintain score for two different teams and also tracks Fall of Wickets using blocks

How I built it

While using this in live I ran into issues relating to speed of adding data. So I utilised Airtable custom script to simplify adding scores (and balls faced) to match pace of the game.

Challenges I ran into

I was constantly looking for inspirations/ example that could ease my approach to building a simple custom script. Additionally I ran into some weird scripting issues that are possibly related to the way JS handles object manipulation.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I haven't participated in open Hackathons or Airtable contests prior to this; so this was interesting for me to work on in few days of notice. I am super proud to say that the base came clean on the day of live demonstration to a dozen excited kids (and their dads)! Almost none of them had heard about Airtable and a few of them who were technically inclined will probably dip in sooner than later!

I also got to know Airtable launched a "button" functionality and I am happy to say that I managed to utilise this very quickly in my base! To achieve so many things in a span of 2 days (yeah that was the notice period I got before I took this role), I felt really accomplished.

What I learned

It is quite easy to build a simple working product using Airtable if the core logic is there. Based on my past history in setting up bases, if there is a bunch of data that can be roughly put in some excel, you can instrument it even better using Airtable.

What's next for Cricket Scorecard

I think there is a LOT more I want to do esp. around handling bowler part of the scoreboard. I think coming up with an even compact product is in the cards!
