CredPulse: Real-Time Cashflow Underwriting and Borrowing Capacity Engine

Competition Section: Credit

Project Overview

"CredPulse does not ask how much you earn. It asks how much credit you can safely afford."

"You do not need a multi-year debt history to prove you can afford credit. CredPulse turns real-time cashflow into explainable, affordable borrowing capacity."

CredPulse is a cashflow-based decision-support engine that estimates affordable borrowing capacity for independent contractors, freelancers, and thin-file earners who are overlooked or penalized by conventional credit bureaus.

Traditional credit scoring models evaluate backward-looking debt history. If an individual has avoided debt, operates on variable freelance contracts, or has not held credit cards for years, legacy bureaus assign them a subprime rating or label them "unscorable". Meanwhile, these individuals often maintain positive monthly cashflow, healthy savings reserves, and reliable payment discipline.

CredPulse addresses this blind spot by shifting underwriting from static credit history to real-time cashflow telemetry. By evaluating cashflow velocity, income volatility, true free cashflow margins, and liquid reserve depth, CredPulse estimates an applicant's safe, affordable borrowing capacity right now.

How the Underwriting Engine Works (Formulas and Methodology)

CredPulse replaces arbitrary black-box scoring with an explainable, deterministic mathematical model designed around four risk-weighted pillars:

1. Cashflow Velocity and Net Inflow (30% Weight)

Measures the volume and consistency of net funds entering versus exiting the account over 30, 60, and 90-day intervals.

  • Metric: Inflow-to-Outflow Ratio = Verified Net Deposits / Total Monthly Disbursements.
  • A ratio consistently above 1.2 is treated by CredPulse as a positive cashflow-health signal indicating organic debt-servicing capacity.

2. Income Volatility and Floor Sizing (25% Weight)

Gig workers often experience seasonal or milestone-based payment fluctuations. Rather than treating every dip as an automatic default signal, CredPulse calculates the standard deviation of monthly earnings relative to average inflows (Coefficient of Variation) to establish a conservative baseline earning floor:

  • Volatility Rate: Volatility_Rate = Standard_Deviation(Monthly_Inflows) / Average_Monthly_Inflows
  • Stressed Income Floor: Income_floor = Average_Monthly_Income * (1 - Volatility_Rate)
  • Safe credit limits are calculated against this floor, protecting both the borrower and lender during low-earning months.

3. Risk-Adjusted Cashflow Margin (RACM) (25% Weight)

Traditional Debt-to-Income (DTI) ignores essential living costs. CredPulse isolates non-discretionary survival expenses (housing, utilities, food) to calculate true Risk-Adjusted Cashflow Margin (RACM):

  • RACM: RACM = Income_floor - Essential_Living_Expenses - Current_Debt_Payments
  • This ensures credit is extended only when an organic surplus remains after all essential survival costs are met.

4. Emergency Liquidity Reserve Runway (20% Weight)

Measures how many months the applicant can survive with zero income while continuing to service debt commitments:

  • Runway: Runway_Months = Liquid_Savings / (Essential_Living_Expenses + Current_Debt_Payments)
  • A larger verified liquid buffer improves resilience to temporary income disruptions.

Transparent Credit Scoring and Sizing Formulas

To ensure complete transparency, both the CredPulse Score and the Safe Credit Limit are calculated using deterministic mathematical formulas.

1. Pillar Score Normalization Framework (0 to 100 Scale)

To ensure complete algorithmic transparency with zero black-box scoring, each risk pillar is normalized via exact piecewise linear interpolation:

  • Velocity Score (30% Weight): Evaluates Inflow-to-Outflow Ratio (Verified Inflows / Total Monthly Disbursements):
    • If Ratio >= 2.0: Velocity_Score = MIN(100, 88 + (Ratio - 2.0) * 12) (Applicant A at 2.0 receives exactly 88)
    • If 1.2 <= Ratio < 2.0: Velocity_Score = 60 + ((Ratio - 1.2) / 0.8) * 28
    • If 1.0 <= Ratio < 1.2: Velocity_Score = 20 + ((Ratio - 1.0) / 0.2) * 20 (Applicant B at 1.10 receives exactly 30)
    • If Ratio < 1.0: Velocity_Score = MAX(10, Ratio * 20)
  • Volatility Score (25% Weight): Evaluates income stability:
    • If Volatility <= 15%: Volatility_Score = 100 - (Volatility_Rate * 100 * 1.0) (Applicant A at 10% receives exactly 90)
    • If Volatility > 15%: Volatility_Score = MAX(10, 85 - ((Volatility_Rate * 100 - 15) / 20) * 50) (Applicant B at 35% receives exactly 35)
  • RACM Score (25% Weight): Evaluates Risk-Adjusted Cashflow Margin relative to non-discretionary survival expenses:
    • If RACM <= 0: RACM_Score = 10 (Default safety floor: Applicant B receives 10)
    • If RACM > 0: RACM_Score = MIN(100, (RACM / Essential_Living_Expenses) * 96.15) (Applicant A at $1,680/$1,900 receives exactly 85)
  • Runway Score (20% Weight): Evaluates reserve burn coverage (Runway_Months = Liquid_Savings / Total_Disbursements):
    • If Runway >= 6.0 Months: Runway_Score = 100
    • If Runway < 6.0 Months: Runway_Score = MAX(10, MIN(100, Runway_Months * 21.0)) (Applicant A at 3.57 months receives 75; Applicant B at 0.14 months receives 10)

2. The CredPulse Composite Score (300 to 850 Scale)

With each pillar normalized to a 0-100 score:

Composite_Factor = (Velocity_Score * 0.30) + (Volatility_Score * 0.25) + (RACM_Score * 0.25) + (Runway_Score * 0.20)
CredPulse_Score = 300 + (Composite_Factor / 100) * 550

3. The Safe Credit Limit Formula

Credit limit is mathematically bound by positive cashflow margin and cushioned by liquid reserves. If the applicant's risk-adjusted cashflow margin is zero or negative, the credit limit drops to zero:

Safe_Credit_Limit = RACM > 0 ? (RACM * 3.0) + (Liquid_Savings * 0.10) : 0

Comparative Demonstration: Applicant A vs. Applicant B

To demonstrate why cashflow velocity provides superior risk intelligence compared to nominal gross salary, consider two applicants evaluated by the CredPulse model:

  • Applicant A (Freelance Web Designer):

    • Monthly Gross Inflows: $4,200
    • Earnings Volatility: Low (10%)
    • Essential Living Expenses: $1,900
    • Existing Debt Payments: $200
    • Liquid Savings: $7,500
    • Mathematical Step-by-Step:
    • Income_floor = $4,200 * (1 - 0.10) = $3,780
    • RACM = $3,780 - $1,900 - $200 = $1,680
    • Safe_Credit_Limit = ($1,680 * 3.0) + ($7,500 * 0.10) = $5,040 + $750 = $5,790
    • Pillar Scores = Velocity: 88, Volatility: 90, RACM: 85, Runway: 75 -> Composite: 85.15
    • CredPulse_Score = 300 + (0.8515 * 550) = 768 / 850 (Prime Tier)
    • Result: Strong positive cashflow and healthy savings qualify Applicant A for a $5,790 prime revolving line without historical bureau cards.
  • Applicant B (High-Earning Corporate Contractor):

    • Monthly Gross Inflows: $6,500 (55% higher gross income than Applicant A)
    • Earnings Volatility: High (35%)
    • Essential Living Expenses: $4,800
    • Existing Debt Payments: $1,100
    • Liquid Savings: $800
    • Mathematical Step-by-Step:
    • Income_floor = $6,500 * (1 - 0.35) = $4,225
    • RACM = $4,225 - $4,800 - $1,100 = -$1,675 (Negative cashflow under stressed conditions)
    • Safe_Credit_Limit = Since RACM is negative, Safe_Credit_Limit = $0 (Unqualified / Elevated Risk)
    • Pillar Scores = Velocity: 30, Volatility: 35, RACM: 10, Runway: 10 -> Composite: 22.25
    • CredPulse_Score = 300 + (0.2225 * 550) = 422 / 850 (Elevated Risk / Consolidation Candidate)
    • Result: Despite significantly higher nominal income, heavy non-discretionary commitments and high volatility create high default vulnerability. CredPulse safely prevents over-indebtedness.

Borrowing Power Improvement: Integrated Debt Optimization

CredPulse does not treat debt payoff as an unrelated personal finance gimmick. The integrated Debt Avalanche Engine functions as an active borrowing power expansion loop:

  • The Problem: High-interest revolving debt (22% to 28% APR) drains monthly disposable income, directly reducing an applicant's Risk-Adjusted Cashflow Margin (RACM).
  • The Solution: CredPulse calculates the optimal mathematical sequence (highest APR first) to eliminate expensive debt rapidly.
  • The Feedback Loop: When an applicant pays off a revolving credit card requiring $120 in monthly minimums, that $120 is directly freed up in RACM. Under our 3.0x multiplier formula, retiring that single debt expands the applicant's safe borrowing capacity by $360 ($120 * 3.0 = $360), providing immediate, measurable financial incentives.

Key Differentiators and Market Advantages

  1. Pre-Qualification Without Hard Credit Pulls: CredPulse evaluates read-only cashflow telemetry to pre-qualify applicants without requiring a traditional hard credit pull.
  2. Explainable Actionable Rationale: Instead of ambiguous rejection letters, CredPulse generates transparent, mathematically grounded audit reports showing exactly why a limit was set and which financial levers will expand it.
  3. Serving the Growing Independent Workforce: In 2023, 64 million Americans performed freelance or contract labor (Upwork Freelance Forward 2023 Survey). CredPulse enables digital lenders to underwrite this population safely based on verified cashflow telemetry rather than outdated employment assumptions.
  4. Instant In-Browser Execution: The reference prototype computes all calculations instantly in the client browser, providing a responsive experience with zero server latency.

Prototype Implementation vs. Production Architecture

To maintain clarity and technical integrity, CredPulse separates its hackathon demonstration from its commercial enterprise blueprint:

  • Hackathon Demonstration Prototype (Live Working Demo):

    • Implemented as an interactive client-side web application (HTML5, responsive CSS3, vanilla JavaScript).
    • Includes two-way synchronized numeric sliders, instant live score and borrowing capacity recalibration, an in-page debt registry with working addition and deletion, and pre-loaded test profiles (Applicant A, Applicant B, and High Debt).
    • Operates with 100% privacy: all scenario testing executes in memory with zero external tracking.
  • Production Architecture (Target Commercial Deployment):

    • Data Ingestion: Integrates with open banking aggregators (such as Plaid or MX Sandbox) via secure OAuth 2.0 tokenization.
    • Statement Integrity: Transaction batches are verified via hash checksums to validate statement consistency before ingestion.
    • Ephemeral Telemetry: Calculates rolling 30/60/90-day cashflow velocity and volatility metrics in temporary memory, storing only verified risk factors rather than permanent raw banking credentials.
