Inspiration

As of this year, one in three young people in the UK view credit cards as potential debt traps [1]. We wanted to demystify the use of credit cards and bring financial literacy to more people, especially students who could benefit in the long-run from thinking ahead.

What it does

The player makes financial decisions that influence their credit balance and credit score. The aim of the game is to maximise both of these variables. If the user is able to reach a certain credit score threshold, they are eligible to receive a mortgage, and will have an additional level to complete. At the end of the game, the user is able to see the sequence of events that led them to their outcome and also see the consequences of alternative choices.

How we built it

The application was developed using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Additionally, it used React and Framework7.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we struggled to set up React Native and so switched to creating a mobile-mimicking application using HTML and CSS. Towards the end of the project we struggled with merging two large aspects of the application that used two different frameworks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the polished nature of our final product, and the fact that we were able to integrate so many different functionalities into our application. This includes a chatbot, an advanced decision tree showing all the choices you made throughout the game, engagement features such as personalisation and minigames, and a help page to help those struggling with financial problems.

What we learned

We learned how to make a chatbot from scratch! Several members of our team have also never used React before, or integrated different frameworks.

What's next for Creditwise

We hope to add extra features such as more exciting minigames, more interactive education-based content and to improve our decision tree.
