Inspiration

I was greatly inspired by the popularity of the Finch self-care app, a virtual pet style app where the user takes care of their finch by completing daily to-do lists. As a person who's used Finch before, I know how effective it is, and I wanted to reimagine more complicated topics (such as finance) into a manageable and fun gamified app targeted towards young adults.

What it does

The app is intended to function effectively the same as Credit Karma where the user can measure their credit score. In theory, the user can interact with Credit Buddy and ask them questions similar to how a user would interact with a customer service chatbot for added assistance. I believe that a cute cartoon turtle would be more approachable to a young adult user than a human customer service representative.

How we built it

I used Figma in order to build a similar layout to Credit Karma's app. All images aside from the logo are sourced from clipart, and all of the formatting was crafted and re-created by me. In order to ensure the user actually enjoys opening and exploring the app, the interface is designed to be pleasing to the eye while balancing cute and simple imagery with relevant and useful information. This approachable nature will hopefully draw its intended audience to find enjoyment in managing their finances.

Challenges we ran into

The primary challenge was getting used to Figma's interface as someone who has no experience with UX design or Figma itself. However, my prior knowledge of navigating applications like Photoshop made the learning curve smoother.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm especially proud of the interface that I came up with. The features including Credit Buddy's "habitat", the credit score graph that looks like a mountain range, and the plant growth icons were all ideas that I find to be aesthetically pleasing. The mountain range was an idea that I had right after I figured out how masking objects worked in Figma.

What we learned

Because I had no prior experience, I learned a lot of Figma's basics from designing to prototyping. Figma's interface is quite enjoyable and I hope to use it in the future. Furthermore, I learned how to manage my time while participating in a project-based hackathon, which I have not done before.

What's next for Credit Karma Redesign (Mei Miller)

This project is currently inspiring me to develop a similar gamified app of my own someday. Obviously, it will not be a blatant copy of Credit Karma, but I hope to create similar content that is both fun and informative. This hackathon may very well be a step towards genuine experience in app development.
