Inspiration

As we reach 19 years of age and become adults, many of us will want to open credit cards. However, there is a vast selection of credit cards on the market, and the choices can be overwhelming. In addition, much of the information that we may use to inform our decision is biased towards a certain bank due to sponsorships and such. Many people do not know how credit cards work or what value point rewards can bring.

What it does

Credere is an all-in-one tool for comparing and analyzing different credit cards. It allows users to compare different (Canadian) credit cards easily, whether by institution, reward rate, or annual fee, among other metrics. An integrated chat feature allows users to communicate with an AI chatbot. Our AI-powered Optimizer feature also allows one to receive recommendations based on an uploaded photo. A CPP calculator simplifies the process of translating the value of points to cent amounts. Users may also learn credit-related terminology through an in-site glossary. The application aims to bring more transparency to people who are trying to choose a credit card, particularly to those who are not as well versed in the technical details of credit cards, helping to build financial literacy.

How we built it

Credere was built with the node.js and react frameworks, using the Typescript, Javascript languages, as well as JSON, HTML and CSS. AI assistance was featured prominently in development.

Challenges we ran into

There were a number of errors that required considerable work to resolve, mostly in the Typescript part. In addition, merge conflicts became a serious problem as development continued with each member working on their own part without awareness of the changes made by other members. There was a particularly notable technical problem in the workspace for the resolution of merge conflicts at one point, adding another layer of complication.

What we learned

  • How to deal with merge conflicts
  • Which parts of development can be handled by AI easily
