Inspiration
Creativity often feels random - sometimes ideas flow effortlessly, and sometimes nothing comes. Research shows that creative moments are not purely accidental. They can be influenced by physiological states, daily rhythms, and context.
This made us wonder: what if we could sense when creativity is most likely to happen? Instead of forcing creativity, what if we could notice the moment when it naturally appears?
This idea inspired Moment: a gentle companion that helps people recognize, act on, and reflect on their creative peaks.
What it does
Moment uses a skin-wearable “magic sticker” to sense subtle physiological signals related to creative states. The system translates these signals into a simple and playful interface:
- A small character reflects your current creativity state
- When a creative peak appears, Moment nudges you to act
- If you capture the moment, you collect stickers as rewards
- Over time, a creativity log reveals patterns in when your inspiration tends to appear Instead of pressuring people to be creative, Moment helps them notice when creativity naturally happens.
How we built it
We began by researching how creativity relates to physiological and contextual factors, such as circadian rhythms, emotional states, and cognitive arousal. Based on this insight, we explored sensing technologies that could capture these signals with minimal friction. Skin-wearable sensors stood out because they can be lightweight, continuous, and almost invisible to the user. We then designed a system that translates complex data into simple, friendly interaction, using characters, prompts, and collectible stickers to make creativity feel playful rather than performative.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was avoiding the feeling that creativity is being “measured” or judged. We wanted the system to support creativity, not quantify it competitively. Another challenge was balancing scientific grounding with a playful experience. Creativity is complex and personal, so we focused on presenting signals as suggestions rather than absolute truths.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a concept that connects research, sensing technology, and playful design into a cohesive experience. We’re especially proud of how Moment reframes creativity: not as something you must constantly produce, but as something you can notice, nurture, and reflect on.
What we learned
This project reminded us that creativity is deeply tied to human rhythms. By paying attention to signals from the body and environment, we can design tools that work with people rather than against them. We also learned how powerful playful design can be in turning complex data into something approachable and meaningful.
What's next for Moment
In the future, Moment could integrate with other wearable devices to enrich the signals it detects. We also see opportunities to explore community features that celebrate creativity without turning it into competition. Ultimately, we hope Moment could help people better understand their own creative rhythms, and treat their creativity with more kindness.
