What it does
Hall effect sensors are used to detect the presence of the magnets attached underneath each chess piece (the pieces were made in Fusion :D) Python-chess is used for the chess algorithm
How we built it
A lot of prototyping and luck
Challenges we ran into
We experienced difficulties trying to make sure all 8 hall effects sensors worked when we attached them to the multiplexer. As non-elec eng people, we learnt about the existence of pull-down resistors

We're going scale it to a full 8 by 8 chessboard after this.
