Inspiration

As a lifelong craft enthusiast, I wanted a space that felt as warm and welcoming as my home studio – a place where creators of all skill levels could learn, share, and connect without overwhelm. The joy of making something with your hands is universal, and I wanted to bottle that into a digital experience that honors slow, intentional creativity.

What it does

Art & Craft Studio is a one-stop platform for craft lovers: browse skill-leveled tutorials (knitting, pottery, paper art), find themed project inspiration (holiday decor, custom gifts), trade craft supplies, and share finished work in a community gallery. Every detail is designed to feel approachable and inspiring.

How we built it

We started with core wireframes focused on accessibility and flow, then built out the UI with HTML5/CSS3 (Tailwind for consistency) and JavaScript for micro-interactions. We used IntersectionObserver for scroll animations, Mapbox API for store locator, and SVG for subtle animated decor elements – all while prioritizing responsive design for mobile/desktop.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing visual flair (parallax, hover animations) with accessibility was tough – we had to ensure all motion respects prefers-reduced-motion settings. Also, perfecting the masonry layout for the community gallery took trial-and-error to work seamlessly across screen sizes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a platform that’s both beautiful and functional: animations enhance (not distract from) the user experience, empty states are thoughtful (not generic), and the color palette/typography feel cohesive yet warm – true to the craft community’s spirit.

What we learned

Accessibility isn’t a "nice-to-have" – it’s foundational. We also learned that small micro-interactions (card hovers, floating form labels) make the platform feel human, and iterative testing with fellow craft lovers shaped the most intuitive flow for filters/tutorials.

What's next for this project

We plan to add user profiles to let creators track their favorite tutorials, integrate a simple messaging feature for supply swaps, and expand the tutorial library to include more niche crafts (fiber art, woodworking) based on community feedback.
