Inspiration

Most portfolio and gallery sites hand you a grid of images and I wanted to change that

What it does

rate is a three-room 3D site that changes the traditional way to display portfolio and gallery sites

How we built it

React + Vite, deployed on Netlify. The 3D is raw WebGL rather than a scene-graph library

Challenges we ran into

A phone-sized failure I nearly shipped. The main 3D scene was not visible in the mobile version

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm also proud that the site withholds. There is no menu and no instructions beyond one line of grey text. It trusts you to click the folder — and that first click is the whole experience in miniature.

What we learned

Combining polished components is not the easy path. Each one assumed it owned the page — the canvas, the pointer events, the scroll — and every integration bug came from that assumption rather than from the components being wrong.

What's next for Crate

Audio. The records should play. A short loop per sleeve, starting as the record slides out and panning with its rotation, is the obvious missing sense.
