Inspiration

My inspiration for Crash Out was based on my daughter’s obsession with saying the phrase “I’m going to crash out” whenever I ask her to take the garbage out as she is leaving for school. We’ve always loved watching the show WipeOut, so I wanted to combine the two ideas after seeing inspiration from a game on another platform. The goal was to create an experience that was easy to understand yet challenging enough to be engaging and fun within seconds of players landing in the world.

What it does

Crash Out provides a fast-paced, exhilarating experience for players of all ages. Available in both mobile and VR formats, it challenges players to race up a junk disposal while dodging falling debris. The game’s short-loop design ensures it’s easy to jump into while offering enough excitement to keep players hooked.

How we built it

I admire the polished look of custom model imports and knew that I wanted to take this approach, although I don’t yet have experience creating them. Instead of purchasing assets, I "MacGyvered" the world design by creatively combining and manipulating assets I sourced from the Horizon Worlds library. To enhance the visuals and interactivity with mobile, I also ventured into learning a few essential mechanics by combining code blocks and TypeScript.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was coding and a steep learning curve to grasp 3d modeling with blender, typescript, mobile and code blocks. This limitation forced me to adapt my ideas, focus on what was achievable with my current skill set, and set aside some bigger world concepts when my knowledge catches up to my dreams.

Experiencing bugs and overcoming the access to certain tools due to regional access, meant coming up with some creative solutions as temporary workarounds.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges with the bugs and my knowledge, I’m proud of how Crash Out came together. It pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and learn some TypeScript and mobile controls, which significantly improved the world’s mobile functionality. I’m also thrilled with how the gameplay mechanics turned out.

What we learned

This project taught me how to think creatively within constraints and make the most of the resources and skills available. I learned how to blend functionality and fun, ensuring players have an intuitive and enjoyable experience. The process also highlighted the importance of adaptability and problem-solving when dealing with technical limitations.

What's next for Crash Out: Mobile Horizon Short Loop Competition

Looking ahead, I’d love to expand Crash Out with new levels featuring different themes and increasing difficulties. Another exciting addition would be a coin-based reward system, where players earn "Crash Cash" or make a purchase to unlock superpowers or sabotage others, enhancing the game’s social element and providing a revenue stream.
