Inspiration

As someone who’s always loved handcrafted pieces and saw how hard independent makers struggle to reach buyers, I wanted to build a space that centers artisans—connecting their creativity with people who value unique, handmade work. The gap between creators, suppliers, and craft lovers felt avoidable, so Craft Market was born to bridge it.

What it does

Craft Market is a one-stop platform for everything handmade: browse global artisan goods, learn new craft skills via tutorials, find verified material suppliers, discover local craft events, and connect with fellow makers in a dedicated community space. Every feature is built to support creators and celebrate handmade culture.

How we built it

We started with mapping user needs—talking to local artisans and craft buyers to prioritize features like regional event filtering and transparent commission models. We built the frontend with React for smooth navigation, used MongoDB to organize product/supplier data, and leveraged AWS for reliable hosting. Design choices leaned into warm, natural tones to reflect the artisanal spirit.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing simplicity with functionality was tough—we wanted the platform to be intuitive for casual buyers but robust enough for makers to showcase their work. Filtering global product/supplier data by region also required fine-tuning geolocation logic to ensure accuracy across European and North American markets.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a cohesive experience that unites e-commerce, learning, and community—all without overwhelming users. We’re especially proud of the transparent 8% commission model, which builds trust with makers, and the curated supplier directory that connects creators with reliable, sustainable material sources.

What we learned

We learned how deeply community drives the craft space—features that foster connection (like the skill exchange forum) resonated far more than we expected. We also gained insight into balancing global reach with local relevance, ensuring European and North American users both feel seen in event listings and supplier options.

What's next for this project

We plan to add user profiles so makers can showcase their portfolios, integrate a simplified payment system for direct sales, and expand the tutorial hub to include live virtual workshops. We also want to grow the local event calendar to include more small-town craft fairs across Europe and North America.
