Inspiration

Every day we receive countless automated emails, so it's gotten to the point where we just let the notifications pile up. This may be ok for certain things, but not for something as important as COVID screening. Thus, knowing how easy it is to miss emails, and how troublesome it is to click onto the site and go through the questions, we created COVTEST.

What it does

COVTEST is a conversational AI that simplifies the COVID screening process by calling each Western student daily, asking them the screening questions, allowing busy students to get it done - benefiting the entire community.

How we built it

COVTEST is built with Dasha AI,

Dasha is a conversational-AI-as-a-service platform that lets you embed realistic voice and text conversational capabilities into your apps or products

Challenges we ran into

As three first-year students with limited coding knowledge, we found it difficult to start building out the project initially. However, with the treasure trove of quickstart videos that Dasha AI provided with us and some handy Googling, we were able to overcome this barrier and create COVTEST.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our accomplishments can be summarized into three points:

  1. Wide-Ranging Implications: We were able to create a project that is significant to our lives and the lives of all Western students, all within 36 hours!

  2. Response Variation: Using Dasha AI, we were able to accept many forms of user input (from #messageHasIntent) for "yes," and "no," making the lives of students and Western that much simpler.

  3. Digressions: Humans are fickle and unpredictable - that's just a fact. However, with Dasha AI, we were able to create responses to COVID-related questions that students may suddenly ask, and afterwards, return to the rest of the survey.

What we learned

Dasha AI rocks! Besides that, as newcomers to Hackathons, we learned how to combine our respective coding and pitch styles to create a unique product and pitch. Through this hack we all strengthened our critical thinking and time management skills as our ability to truly think through every single human thought path was tested, all while trying to pick up the language.

What's next for COVTEST

Anything! However, we would like to create more digression pathways so that students can easily stay informed and subsequently - safe during this global pandemic. When researching Dasha AI, we saw that it had the very real capability to incorporate other languages in the future, which is something crucial to us, as every Western student (regardless of their language capabilities) deserves equal access.
