Inspiration
SARS-CoV-2, the agent responsible for COVID-19 infection, is a new respiratory virus that is spreading rapidly around the world, and the rapid spread of this virus is currently threatening to overwhelm the health system in most countries of the world as this disease has a high mortality rate in vulnerable populations.
We believe the most effective strategies to limit this spread include compliance with precautionary measures and the need to comply with official recommendations. As such, awareness of the risk of contracting the disease and an understanding of the precautions to be taken are of the utmost importance. However, estimating the risk of contracting the virus is complex because it involves assessing both symptoms and possible exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, a tool is needed to assess the risk of having contracted SARS-CoV-2 and remotely connect patients to doctors and diagnostic centres. CoVive, a COVID-19 risk assessment and prevention solution currently being developed by Medicus will play an important role supporting citizens and governments in overcoming this pandemic challenge.
What it does
Our goal is to provide a tool that helps people assess their risk of being infected, keep them informed of the latest news regarding COVID-19 and updated measures to protect themselves and their community. This includes putting resources at their disposal to guide them towards the right behaviors to adopt. The Medicus-COVID-19 application therefore brings added value to people who are at risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2. The Medicus-COVID19 application will provide the user with a score which will determine his risk of having contracted the virus. This risk calculator is based on the directives of the highest international health institutions, in particular WHO, CDC, ECDC and the Robert Koch Institute, in order to communicate recommendations on the precautionary measures to be adopted and conduct to be followed adapted to the individual level. It also provides recommendations concerning the need to carry out diagnostic tests in accordance with the recommendations of national and international authorities.
The main objectives of the application will be to raise awareness, help protect and facilitate the assessment of the risk of having contracted the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Once the tool is rolled out and pushed by public and private organisations in the target countries, we expect it will contribute to lighten the load on Emergency Services and hotlines, helping patients, doctors and health operators (4, 5, 6), in addition to contributing to citizens’ overall safety and well-being in these difficult times. We identify furthermore secondary benefits, resulting to a direct or indirect impact in all target groups:
Keep users informed of the latest reliable information regarding the potential pandemic;
- Provide a solid source of information to help separate myths from facts about COVID-19 disease;
- Make users aware of appropriate security measures, self-monitoring techniques and the precautions to be taken;
- Keep users informed of the infection situation in their country and in the world, in real time;
Provide users with a medical link, including information and emergency numbers depending on their residence, which they can contact.
Guide users through support programs that help them with hygiene and quarantine by allowing them to stay in shape and pass time productively;
- Personalized information according to the user's risk level;
- Teleconsultation and tele-expertise, depending on the countries’ national regulations.
How we built it
This application was developed in partnership with Bionext Lab and is available in several countries. For each country, we have adapted the algorithms and recommendations to the local guidelines. In this case in France, the HAS and the Pasteur Institute, and the recommendations of the French government, in particular the Ministry of Solidarity and Health (all sources are cited in the app), in addition to the WHO, and the ECDC.
Challenges we ran into
One of the most important challenges encountered is adapting the application to the countries and the guidelines imposed by them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed CoVive in only 2 weeks, and to have obtained the CE class I marking at the beginning of April.
What we learned
We have learned how to react extremely quickly to a crisis that we have never had the opportunity to experience before. Our agility allowed us to release in record time a complete application that could help the greatest number of people.
What's next for CoVive
We would like to distribute CoVive free of charge to as many people and countries as possible and to those countries that we can help directly with our know-how and expertise.
