Inspiration

When I first started learning about who is affected worse by COVID-19, my 84 yo grandpa who recently had open-heart surgery was my first thought. From that point I was building to save his life:

What it does

COVIDx quantifies the determinants of COVID-19 health by using wearables, medical records, & surveys.

How it works:

  1. The user completes a series of short surveys related to the determinants of health. Using smart logic, questions become personalized based on previous answers.

  2. The user can connect a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or a Withings device to sync HR, sleep, activity, & BP (Withings only) data.

  3. A total health score is generated based on individual determinant scores calculated from surveys and wearables.

  4. Where low scores are present, the user is guided to personalized information needed to better understand their weak areas and resources needed to manage their conditions.

  5. Along with information & resources, the user is nudged to complete daily, weekly, & monthly tasks designed to incentivize health improvements via gamification.

  6. The user earns points that can be used as a discount for healthy food (with local grocery store participation) or online health & wellness services (meditation, telemedicine, etc.)

How I built it

COVIDx started as a volunteer project on HelpwithCovid.com. It's still being built.

Challenges I ran into

I hoped we could get the Mississippi Public Health Department to use COVIDx, but when I finally talked to their tech team on July 1, they said they were laser-focused on only wanting a contact tracing solution. So, now we're looking for a better distribution model, which looks to be the diabetes prevention & obesity networks across states.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'll circle back to this when we beat COVID-19.

What I learned

I'm learning the best way to asynchronously organize and manage a volunteer project. This is still ongoing.

What's next for COVIDx
