Intro

Every society has to be appropriately prepared to tackle unexpected events, like pandemics or natural hazards. In these situations, certain parts of societal networks and infrastructure are misfunctional, people's lives are in danger and the generalized lack of stability makes it difficult for governments to take decisions and act in time. Moreover, in emenergency situtations the first need is to provide shelter to victims and first-aid. When it comes to COVID-19 pandemic, all societies are in need of additional buildings to function as hospitals and certain buildings to function as reference centres or the base for local authorities to gather and discuss over next steps. It is very rare for societies to have 100% the information they need in order to take action and convert an existing building (in use or not) to a hospital without on-site visits, inspections and time-loss in building new building extnesions or even whole temporary buildings in some weeks. Therefore a tool to provide all the information needed for the occupancy of a building along with 24/7 monitoring for air quality and social distancing of people inside the building is needed now more than ever. Co-Resist4ALL provides all the relevant information of a building and permits its conversion to a hospital or governmental headquarters in record time!!!!

Inspiration

Lack of easy-to-use technology for rapidly assessing the optimal use of buildings to tackle emerging situations such as pandemic situations.

Lack of technology to easily map an existing building with real-time occupancy analytics for analyzing human presence and provide insights on potential emerging applications such as evacuation planning, social distancing (COVID-19 related) and queue management.

What it does

Easy to use interface for rapid assessment of a building for potential hosting during emergency situations - Coupled with advanced occupancy-driven building simulation to optimize space planning.

Supports both planning (i.e. for rapid renovation) and operational lifecycle of a building, with special focus on small (public) buildings for the real-time assessment and for improved planning on complex buildings (i.e. hospitals).

How we built it

Capitalizing on existing commercial off-the-self Building Information Modelling toolkit of BuildindHow, with support of integrating multi-layered information (from structural to detailed information of a building based on IFC standard) to advanced building performance simulation engine provided by a pioneer ICT Research Institute in Greece and in Europe (CERTH/ITI).

Challenges we ran into

The two platforms, the BIM and the IOT platform for the sensors monitoring need to communicate. The sensor data will have to be inserted in the 4D BIM model as a layer.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

During EUvsVIRUS hackathon we managed to build a 4D BIM of an existing building that is indeed monitored with sensors 24/7. The current results show a fully simulated building in terms of structural integrity, architectural design, materials used, energy consumption, human activity, operations, water and electricity use, air quality, temprature...all in real-time.

Impact

Towards supporting EC Directive for a common toolbox for the use of technology and data to combat and exit from the COVID-19 crisis we created a platform that can tackle the spread of the virus and and indeed save lives. Conventional buildings can be converted to hospitals with monitored conditions in their interior. Hotels can be converted to temporary residences for quaranteened people and the reference buildings will provide safety (structural integrity) and monitored social distancing so that govermental stakeholders could safely take action and act towards the COVID crisis. The solution is applicable to the whole European Community, practically impacting more than 741 million people.

What's next for CoResist4ALL

We need to integrate all the building information and sensor data to one database and platform so that governmental stakeholders can have full access and control over the reference buildings where our project will be implemented.
