Inspiration

A pandemic was undoubtedly not what we had in mind for 2020. The ordeals faced by poorer countries were borderline insufferable. This chapter, which is by far the most gut-wrenching period of our lives, is finally coming to an end. While the more developed countries have effectively begun vaccination, the others are still suffering due to inefficient distribution methods or the humungous population. The never-ceasing death toll is still rampant. To help society, grow the economy, and recover to the "normal" is the project's sole intent.

What it does

We propose a complete system design where the medical authorities can enter the info of vaccinated patients at their centers, registering their fingerprints into the database system. A digital certificate is thus generated and mailed to the person as proof of his vaccination. This digital certificate can be produced at places like multiplexes, airports, railway stations, and the like for verification, enabling smooth functioning of businesses without posing a risk to public health. For proof, the authorities at these places are given access to the database to verify the digital certificate's legitimacy by either scanning the person’s fingerprint or entering the unique id on the certificate. The side effects reported at the hospitals can also be updated in the database through our web portal. This information is processed, and data about the number and type of side effects are displayed on our page. The complete working and user flow is discussed in detail in the video.

How I built it

  • CSS, HTML, and Bootstrap - Used for designing our webpage
  • Express.JS, NodeJS, SQL, and Java Script - Backend Design

Challenges I ran into

We had a tough time handling the hashing algorithm to generate a unique id through the fingerprint registered. Cyber Security and Cryptography are fields we have never set step into before but we took on the challenge knowing that these are some of the most important aspect of a project involving personal data of citizens.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Coming up with a solution that's relevant and a dire need of the hour was our main goal and we are proud to have taken the current global situation into account and looked at every aspect to solve issues surrounding Covid19. We all had experience developing UI/UX and front end, while the backend was a whole new ball game. With a deadline of 24 hours, the amount we have achieved has been such a learning experience and a boost to our confidence.

What I learned

We used a lot of new tools ,that we hadn't used before, for this project like NodeJS and XAMPP. We also tried our hand at deploying the app on web using heroku rather than hosting it locally, though we ran into bugs, it was all in all a thrilling learning experience for us.

What's next for CovidProof

This project is of immense personal importance to all of us. India has been one of the WORST HIT countries due to Covid. Vaccinations are still yet to roll out. We envision our solution being deployed in various Multiplexes, Airports, and Metros. This can also be adopted by the countries that have still not started vaccination. With most of the software done, we will be able to whip up the MVP of our product by the coming week!
