The widespread shelter-in-place policies are leaving many feeling anxious and isolated, bored, and unable to concentrate on work/school. Additionally, many students are not staying informed and using this as a time to socialize more, instead of heeding warnings and staying inside. As students ourselves, we wanted to come up with an online, easily accessible hub for students providing resources to tackle all of these issues in a consolidated space.

What it does

Our site includes tips for being academically productive at home with links to helpful resources, an interactive text bot to help you stay connected and remember self care, consolidated self-care tips, and new data visualizations to help students understand the importance of social distancing and what they can be doing to stop the spread of COVID-19.

How I built it

We built the site by first prototyping and designing it on Figma, then separately creating the bot using the Twilio API and visualizations using online APIs and R. We then created the site using HTML and CSS, and then GitHub Pages.

Challenges I ran into

It was a bit difficult to communicate and put everything together remotely, and stay motivated for such a long period of time, but we found it much more fun to work together when we were all on a Zoom call sharing ideas and progress.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We're really proud of the design of our site as we think it makes it very appealing for visitors to continue to explore it, as well as the functionality of our bot and the aesthetic and informative appeal of our visualizations. We're also proud that our website looks almost exactly as envisioned in our prototype design-wise, and how much we were able to get done in a short amount of time.

What I learned

We learned how to use Figma, various APIs, and GitHub Pages, as well as collaborate on a project as a team (two of us had never done a hackathon before).

What's next for COVIDCare

We plan to finish coding the site so the content of all pages we prototyped are visible, and we plan to implement the member function on the site to keep visitors coming back.
