Team 25 Adonai Amelie Femi Thomas
We are all members of the Young Coders Meet-up which is a youth -led community with an ethos of Diversity, Inclusion and Knowledge sharing. During the lockdown we have all experienced difficult times but planning our virtual meet-ups on Zoom, twice a week, has helped us to stay focussed and connected socially despite the lockdown. However, we know that as much as 40% of young people are experiencing mental health difficulties and are struggling with the sudden changes. When we reviewed the Hackathon categories - joining we felt that the Health and Well-Being section was the area we wanted to focus on. This matches the UN Sustainable Goals (Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being). Amelie spoke about her friend who was struggling with her mental health, even before the lockdown, and has been concerned how she may be coping with the sudden changes and all the bad news of the Coronavirus pandemic. She was keep to explore how young people like her friend could be helped with an App - to enable her to make positive steps around self-care. The whole group felt that this would be a great opportunity to use AI and technology to help others in the community.
We used the Design Thinking template (Jam Board) to ideate about what we all felt were the problems that young people faced due to the Lockdown. Then we presented our ideas and discussed them before choosing the one we all liked and thought could be doable in a Well-being App. We did some research into the problem we identified and came back to discuss our findings - Adonai report that 40% of young people's mental health had deteriorated since the beginning of the lockdown in the UK. This shocked all of us.
We decided to workout how the elements/features would fit together and the design before creating the Wireframes in Marvel. We got some awesome guidance from our mentors. Femi and Thomas wanted to beginning looking at the AI/coding elements and Adonai and Amelie worked on the design (https://marvelapp.com/e69h6ea/screen/68663334) and also gathered more research on the data, news stories and what similar Apps were already in existence. Femi set a Survey Monkey questionnaire to see what our potential users would want in a COVID Well-being App. We were quite surprised by the results and were able to adapt our key focus to reflect the feedback we received.
Femi was designated the project manager as he had an eye for the design/research and the coding side too. This was a tough job because things change all the time and he had to working on communicating more effectively. Adonai has found the design difficult in terms of the colour palette and the regular changes in the App's elements. Also meaningful and current research data was hard to locate. For Amelie, it's been a challenge to make all the changes whilst retaining the over-arching design ethics. It's also being hard to create the Pitch Deck that looks both professional and impactful. The visual are hard to create when we haven't locked down the stats we want to use. This also has made preparing for the Pitch difficult. Femi contacted a CAMHS specialist and he got a lot of good and things that can be changed feedback
For Thomas, it's been difficult making sure he regular give an update and keep up with the fast changing nature of the App. He also found using the API keys difficult. Femi has also found it hard to learn Flutter in such a short period of time alongside project managing everything. It was sometime hard to engage with the amazing Live YouTube session. However, both Amelie and Adonai watched the sessions and made notes to feed back to everyone.
Business Model:
One of the excellent pieces of advice came from Elena's Zoom session about Pitches was to make sure you consult with professionals in the industry that you App is related too. So we did some more research
Amelie used the story of her friend for the pitch and how the app can help her with her metal health issues. She also worked along side Adonai and did the wireframes together. She helped with the research for the Social Services and NSPCC slide for the Pitch Deck. She also spoke to A child protection chair to help with the research to see if there are any links. Amelie also looked at the colour pallets with Adonai and tried to find 2 good colours that would go well with the app design and the logo, so they can clash well together.
Adonai did the research on statistics about young people's health. She also worked along side with Amelie on the wireframes, meaning it had finished quicker. She contacted six people in the contact service asking them what they have noticed in young people's behaviour during the lockdown. She also had the main idea of the logo but then we altered it. She also looked at the colour pallets with Amelie and tried to find 2 good colours that would go well with the app design and the logo, so they can clash well together.
Femi contacted a CAHMS specialist and he got a lot of good and things that can be changed feedback/ information, that really helped us with what to do on our app. The CAHMS specialist was a clinical Psychiatrist lead in Neuro-Diversity. Femi was the project manager and front end developer, he worked on the code for the app using flutter ( a coding app ). Femi taught Adonai and Amelie some of the basics of using marvel.
Thomas was a back end developer and also worked on the API's. He also helped with the demo on the pitch deck. He had a clear idea of what we were going to do for the Non-COVID and COVID News app, meaning how it will look, what type if things will be in it and also the layout of the page and the most trusted API site. He did APK's, he used linux machine and Raspberry Pi. Thomas was working on a machine learning NN to filter out the Non-COVID news and the toggle for the reliable COVID News. He built and hosted a web server running python code that interacted with an API. The app then interacted with this to get information.
