Inspiration

With the COVID vaccine opening up to more age groups in the US, we wanted to provide a tool that notifies our users if a vaccine is available at a site nearby the user's location.

What it does

Our tool notifies the user, via email, if COVID vaccines are available at a nearby site

How we built it

We built the tool using Python, various python libraries, and building APIs to our data sources

Challenges we ran into

We originally wanted to build a tool that locates available vaccines for anyone in the US, but had to cut out scope due to time constraints. So, we focused primarily on vaccine sites and availability within New York.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is the first hackathon for everyone in our group. So, we're proud of dedicating the time to collaborate with a team, to build an end-to-end product from planning to final build, and to compete against other intelligent and likeminded individuals at HackOR.

What we learned

We learned that a lot of our ideas sounded good on paper, but once we started coding we encountered various limitations, constraints, and tradeoffs that caused us to rethink our implementation. We also learned that about building APIs, how to integrate various components of our tool, managing a GitHub repository, and working with a development team.

What's next for COVID Vaccine Availability Notification Tool

A few things that we'd like to do are to expand the tool to include other locations beyond New York, enrich the data that we provide to users, add notification mediums.
