Inspiration
After seeing people all around the world, including our own family members and friends, suffer and be at risk due to Covid-19, we decided that we wanted to dedicate our project to this predicament. Covid-19 vaccinations are being administered, but there is still a lot of vaccine hesitation and disinformation, thus demotivating people from getting vaccinated. That is why we wanted to come up with a solution for this issue in the hackathon, in order to create a healthier and safer future for everyone.
What it does
- The python we coded asks users about their vaccinations in order for them to give reviews. Users enter their name, the vaccine they got, symptoms, the extent of their symptoms, and if they would recommend the vaccine to others. All of this information is then printed as a review, which non-vaccinated people could look at to see truthful first-hand experiences of the vaccine. Thus, this would motivate many people to get vaccinated after seeing that the vaccine does not have outrageous symptoms and that other people in their community and country are recommending they take the vaccine.
- The maze.co form that we created has a similar function to the python we coded. This form is a prototype of what our website would look like if we combined our back-end python with front-end development. Just like the python that we coded, the maze.co asks users to enter what vaccine they got, the symptoms, the extent of side-effects they may have experienced, and if they recommend others to get vaccinated. We hope that this project will help unvaccinated people see that the vaccine is safe and will help them and their close ones stay healthy.
How we built it
- For the python, we used PyCharm CE and coded what we wanted the program to do. We used print statements, variables, input statements, and lists to create our code.
- The maze.co form was created through the maze.co website’s features. We used their different blocks to create a context screen, multiple-choice question, opinion scale, open-ended question, and a yes/no question. Images were also added in the available spaces on the user interface.
Challenges we ran into
Since the two of us are new to coding, we struggled with the coding aspect of this project. We both knew Python, and the basics of a few other languages, but it wasn’t enough to create a cohesive idea. After trying HTML, CSS, and JS multiple times on different platforms to create front-end development, we realized that we didn’t have enough knowledge to create what we wanted to. Thus, we researched and found maze.co which was able to help us create the project we had in mind from the python we coded!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Honestly, we are proud of our entire project. Considering that this was one of the first times we coded and the first hackathon that both of us have ever attended, we would say that we did a decent job! As beginners, it's really exciting and gratifying to see that the python we coded is working!
What we learned
We learned so much coding over the past 24 hours. Even though we didn’t use HTML, CSS, & JS, we still learned a lot about the languages while we attempted to use them in our project. We also learned that websites are created with front-end and back-end development, which we think is pretty cool!
What's next for Covid Vaccine Reviews
- Well, once we learn some more coding, we would love to create this Covid Vaccine Review website by putting together the back-end development we already created with new front-end development that we have to learn how to code! We are really looking forward to becoming more experienced so that way we can create even better projects!
- We also want to attend more hackathons and gain more experience and fun memories!
