Inspiration

Our inspiration for creating Covid Tracer was the absence of good information about risk of contracting COVID-19 on a day to day basis.

What it does

We thought that looking at the number of cases was scary and daunting, but doesn't help you avoid contraction, so we created a way to visualize and assess risk based on location. Covid Trace takes in information based on user surveys, it sends that information to our algorithm for determining risk, and then the risk value is displayed on the map by color, with red being high risk and green being low risk. This gives our users an easy means to identify locations that are "hot spots" for COVID-19 and will allow them to avoid these places to protect themselves and their loved ones.

How I built it

We built this application using python's flask framework, which allowed us to code the backend of the website completely and modularly and then we wrote html, css, and javascript on top of the underlying flask framework to make everything look nice.

Challenges I ran into

Our team ran into a few challenges, many of which were part of coding the front end. We had issues on several occasions with linking our css to our html code. Another challenge we ran into was hosting our website on google cloud with our free domain. We also ran into some issues linking our algorithm to our website, figuring out where to run it and where to store it. We were able to overcome all of these challenges and accomplish a great project in the end.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Our proudest feature is the algorithm that assesses risk, which takes into account all of the provided information from the user to formulate the most correct risk assessment.

What I learned

We learned so much about front end development and large coding applications. It is funny to reflect on the beginning of this project and see how far we have come, all three of us have gone from decent backend developers to accomplished full stack developers. We also learned a lot about making an MVP and meeting a deadline with a great product.

What's next for Covid Tracer

The next step for Covid Tracer is to create a phone app that will make it easier to input information. We want to eventually add functionality for other pandemics that may occur, so our risk assessment algorithm would become more modular to accomodate different types of diseases with different characteristics.
