The problem

Due to hospital and national protocols, sharing treatments between hospitals throughout the EU is a hassle. The process is fragmented and highly bureaucratic, therefore medical staff lack a simple and straight forward way of sharing their treatments. When we talk about saving lives it all comes down to the severity of the case, the effectiveness of the treatment and the response time from medical staff.

The solution

Ranking existing drugs that are being repurposed in a leader board based on effectiveness in the battle against COVID-19, while making it easy and straight forward to submit treatment records.

Users have the possibility of sorting, drilling down and filtering on a wide range of criteria to find successful treatments. E.g. Dr. Jane Doe wants to explore successful treatments for 18 to 50 year old patients, with moderate severity, suffering from heart disease, Diabetes and liver disease as pre-existing conditions.

Preliminary research (survey responses and direct discussions) shows that medical staff are more than willing to connect and share treatments, however due to long shifts, stress and pressure they want something that doesn't use up too much time, it's non bureaucratic, and "feels just as natural as posting an update on facebook" .

Submitting treatment protocols is easy and should be fully GDPR compliant as it does not require any personal patient details.

The 3 step process is straight forward and based on preliminary user testing requires less than 1 minute to submit(excluding the clinical case details).

Step 1: Patient details

• Patient age

• Gender

• Condition severity: Mild / Moderate / Severe / Critical

• Pre-existing conditions: List of most common conditions, with possibility of entering other condition

• Admission date

• Discharged: Yes / No

Step 2: Treatment

• List of re-purposed drugs used & trialed worldwide, with the possibility of entering other drug name

• Additional medication: Drugs used in combination with the above

• Effectiveness: Patient recovered (treatment successful) / Treatment changed (Patient wasn't responding to treatment) / Patient deceased

Step 3: Case details

• Free form text field, where doctors can enter specific details about the treatment and the case.

What you have done during the weekend

Started with a blank sheet and performed exploratory and research sessions. I performed both quantitative research(surveys) and qualitative through one on one interviews and digging into case studies. This resulted on having a definition of the need(easily sharing and discovering treatments; assessing drug effectiveness), the motivation(knowledge sharing without borders) and the end goal(saving lives) for the users.

Based on the above, I defined scenarios and the user flows for the primary and secondary interactions, and structured the Information architecture, resulting in a prototype, which through several rounds of user testing and iterations turned into the end result i'm submitting in this hackathon.

KPI for the user testing sessions

• The ease of discovering treatments for specific cases

• The ease & speed of submitting a treatment record

The solution’s impact to the crisis

Allows doctors to act more swiftly and efficiently by assessing and prescribing treatments based on the effectiveness of re-purposed drugs for specific patient conditions.

The necessities in order to continue the project

As currently I'm in the prototyping stage, the next step is extensive user testing and refining flows and scenarios.

From a technical approach, the best development solution would be using React native and Firebase for deploying the MVP and releasing the closed beta for 100 doctors worldwide. Monitoring interactions in the closed beta and feedback collected will be used for even more refinements and proceeding towards the Open beta.

From a timeline perspective, depending on the size and experience of the team, the closed beta could be live within 1-2months.

The value of your solution after the crisis

This solution can be scaled to cover treatment effectiveness for literally any virus, bacteria or disease.
