Inspiration
We felt that our best moments during quarantine were spent playing video games with friends. To that end we wanted to create something of our own that would emulate those experiences.
What it does
Covid Killer is a 3D multiplayer game in Unity. Up to 2 players will control their own characters and shoot at the incoming waves of viruses.
How I built it
We used Unity as the game engine and used an asset called mirror to help us code the networking infrastructure. Our artist used blender to create the art assets from scratch, while our composer created short pieces that were then fed into OpenAi Musenet to extend the music. Everything else was coded from scratch.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into a lot of issues separating player input in multiplayer mode and having everything sync up well. The physics engine also gave us a lot of trouble.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are very proud of making a game that has a surprising about of polish for something that was made in 2 and a half days. The music and the art really make a simple game feel alive.
What I learned
Each of us were very inexperienced with different areas of the project. One particular area that Dan improved in was working with Unity. While he is an experienced programmer, he hasn't delved much into game making and during this hackathon he learned how to create scripts in Unity and code player movement and shooting. Anthony on the other hand worked with Unity before, but in his struggle to implement multiplayer, he learned a lot about the mirror asset and other networking concepts that allow for a smooth multiplayer experience. Our lead artist, Jason, also learned how to create models that work work in unity and create textures that could be added to unity materials.
What's next for Covid Killer
We would like to make the gameplay more interesting by allowing for more players and different playstyles and adding drops that will heal players and give them power ups.
