Due to Covid, Many families were not able to have access to basic supplies and struggled to find them due to the lock down or them being out of stock. This inspired me to create a website which solves this by providing an easy way to connect individuals and families in their neighborhood.
What it does
Covid Hub is a website that connects individuals from various parts of the city in one place where they can facilitate supplies among themselves or help others in need.
How I built it
I built this website using next.js, a react framework which runs both on the server and the client side. I used firebase for my database.
Challenges I ran into
The first challenge I ran into was error with react's state management where I would update the state and update the text on the screen but it wouldn't update the state in the code itself. For example, if the index state was updated to 1, it would show 1 on the screen but it would be null if logged on the console. The second problem I ran into was initiating the firebase database. This was my first time using firebase and setting it up, reading and writing data took some time to learn.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud of the fact that I was able to complete this project under 2 days with completely new technologies alone. Although I had the idea in my head, I never expected to complete this project in 2 days.
What I learned
I learned how to use react components, state and firebase database.
What's next for Covid Hub
Features that could enhance the website is first authentication where the messages are personalized and the users can edit or delete their messages depending on their convenience. The other aspecst are design and implementing security.
