Inspiration

  • Personally experienced the struggles and frustrations of quarantine protocol, even one of our team members was quarantined during this Hackathon which became a challenge for work efficiency as does it the million other workers in America throughout this pandemic
  • Also felt division through quarantine in the past 8 months, created something in an effort to connect people of similar situations: (1) firstly, positive members of a community to build a support group and help with boredom and loneliness during the 14 day period and (2) secondly, positive coworkers to increase efficiency in the workspace by creating an information channel so all of them can share company workings while they quarantine.

What it does/How we built it

  • We built our project with bottom up design, first creating functions to quiz participants on their symptoms, “expose” functions which altar the covid level from negative to exposed to nearby people, and a class object to store information about each person in the database.
  • From there, we were able to put the functions together to form a user friendly interface with the capability to discover links between possible covid outbreaks in a community and notify the affected immediately by email.
  • Lastly, we formed a model community database and used Turtle to construct a map in order to provide an example of how the program could be quickly applied to real life situations.

Challenges we ran into/Accomplishments that we're proud of/What we learned

  • Challenges we faced during this hackathon were ironic in comparison to our project goal. With one person of our team quarantined, we felt the small scale impacts of COVID-19 on a team, allowing us to understand how difficult the past eight months have been for large companies. With this quiz, however, any company could diagnostically test their employees, quickly notify workers of possible exposure, and form an online network to benefit the mental health of those isolating by connecting them to others.
  • Additionally, none of our team members have competed in a hackathon before, with a couple having no general understanding of Python. While this hackathon was a great opportunity to learn practical application of Python and Turtle, this at first proved mentally challenging, especially when comparing ourselves to the skill of other competitors. Once beginning to brainstorm as a team, however, we surprised ourselves with what we were able to accomplish.
