Inspiration
Due to the spread of COVID 19, restrictions have increased in various states. We want to ensure that everyone is able to remain safe and follow health and safety standards. There have been some instances we have nearly forgotten our masks in our dorm rooms before stepping out, so we have created an application that reminds individuals about the restrictions in their vicinity and reminds them to wear their masks before leaving their residence.
What it does
The application leverages the power of Google cloud, firebase and external databases to provide users with realtime information and notifications about COVID 19. We have made use of the Google Places API to provide information about the health and safety standards at locations that have been visited by our users. Additionally, our application makes use of geofencing to provide users with realtime notifications once they have left an established location, such as their home or residence. Our applications also accesses an external database to provide information about COVID cases in the vicinity.
How we built it
We made use of firebase to store information from our application and also to process phone authentication for user accounts. Additionally, we made use of Google cloud to store information on locations that our users have visited and stored the respective information using firebase. We have also made use of Google cloud APIs to add a geofencing location that sends a notification to the user once they have left a location of their choice.
Challenges we ran into
We had some trouble generating our own map for the application, but we used a database to parse data values and generate a map. Additionally we faced some troubles with setting up accurate proximity with geofencing.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud of our use of the login and phone authentication process that we used to register users. We are also proud of how we learned how to use google maps APS and manipulate external data or incorporate it with google maps. We did not have any experience working with google maps, so we are proud of how far we came.
What we learned
We learned a great deal about working with Google maps, Firestore and APIs. Additionally, we learned the fundamentals behind establishing a Geofence.
What's next for COVID Central
Instead of using a web view, we would like to create our own map to display data and COVID cases. We would also improve our UI and add a more robust review system that allows us to differentiate between restaurants and other locations.
