We were inspired by the world’s need for an efficient contact tracing app that can benefit everyone, from the healthy to the most vulnerable. By creating a cloud based system using Google Firebase, we were able to store data from QR code scans and apply those data to a function that returned a resulting warning alert string based on the severity of the encounter (based on time, location, and day). We faced several roadblocks in building our project. All of us were unfamiliar with the Android Studio IDE and development flow, so we learned to use the IDE as we built our app. We also ditched a traditional backend in favor of Firebase integration, which required us to port all of our backend code to the client. Overall, it was a great experience, and we look forward to using our new skills to publish our new app, or a similar one, to the Google Play Store in the near future.
